Parent-Teen Conflict Counselling

Maybe it's the same argument on repeat, about curfew, screen time, or grades, that ends the same way every time: raised voices, a slammed door, silence at dinner. Maybe your teen used to tell you things, and now every question feels like pulling teeth. Or maybe you've stopped bringing certain topics up at all, because you already know how the conversation is going to go.

Conflict between parents and teens is common and expected, but that doesn't make it easier to live with day to day, especially when it starts to feel like the norm rather than the exception.

Why Parent-Teen Conflict Tends to Build

Teens are working out how much independence they can handle. Parents are trying to keep them safe and stay connected. Those two things don't always line up in the moment, especially around ordinary flashpoints like curfew, phones, friendships, or school.

Add a transition on top, a new school, a breakup, a change at home, and the same disagreements can start showing up more often and lasting longer. What began as an occasional disagreement can turn into resentment or hurt feelings that make it harder to bring up anything uncomfortable at all. Everyone feels misunderstood and like the other isn’t listening or understanding. None of that means something has gone wrong in your family. It usually means the conversations that used to work well enough are not built for where things are now.

How We Approach Parent-Teen Conflict

We start by understanding what is happening for each person, without needing to weigh in on or debate who is “right”. Sessions might include your teen and one or both parents, or the wider family when siblings or other household members are part of the pattern.

Together with your therapist, you will set a goal to work toward, and the pace and structure of sessions are worked out as you go rather than fixed from the start. The work focuses on noticing the patterns that keep conversations exploding, interrupting, shutting down, and finding ways to respond differently. This is steady, collaborative work rather than a quick fix, and it isn't about deciding who needs to change.

Coming in doesn't mean picking a side. The goal is to help everyone understand each others’s point of view, and what each of you is experiencing.

Because we work with families at every stage, from young children through adult children and their parents, we can also provide support for other family members if their experience is part of the pattern, and ensure that your teen's behaviour is not treated as “the problem” to be solved on their own.

What Can Start to Feel Different

  • Bringing up a hard topic without both of you bracing for a fight

  • Catching the pattern partway through instead of watching it play out the same way again

  • Your teen feeling like their side got heard, even when the answer is still no

  • More conversations that end okay, even when nothing is fully resolved

  • Fewer topics that get avoided altogether because they usually end badly

Who This Is For

  • Parents and teens working through ongoing tension at home

  • Separated or divorced parents trying to stay consistent with a teen across two households

  • Blended families navigating a teen's relationship with a step-parent or step-siblings

  • A parent who wants support figuring out how to respond, even if their teen isn't ready to join sessions yet
